Atul Subhash – You may have seen this name trending on social media recently. Dozens of articles have been written about him, and his photo has been widely shared. Atul, a 34-year-old executive from Bangalore, was a husband and father. However, overwhelmed by legal and emotional pressures, he tragically ended his life, leaving behind a detailed account of his experiences.
One last shocking message before his death: we must understand:
Before taking this drastic step, Atul recorded an hour-long video and wrote a detailed 24-page note. In these, he mentioned the people who harassed him and the reasons behind his actions. His last video was titled In the End, and he referred to himself as an “ATM” that will now be permanently closed. He claimed that the family court system had reduced him to nothing more than a source of money.
The marriage and its consequences and legal battles begin:
Atul married Nikita in 2019 after meeting her on a matchmaking website. They also had a child the following year. However, according to Atul, his wife’s family began making repeated demands for money, which reached several lakhs of rupees. When Atul refused to meet these demands, his wife left their Bengaluru home in 2021, taking their child with her. Following this, Atul faced legal cases. His wife accused him and his family under several sections of Indian law, including unnatural sex and dowry harassment. Atul highlighted in his note that his wife claimed that he demanded Rs 10 lakh as dowry and falsely linked her father’s death to this alleged demand. He denied these allegations, saying that his father had been ill for a long time.
Misuse of Section 498A and insensitive court system:
Atul’s case draws attention to the misuse of Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with dowry harassment. While this law was designed to protect women, Atul’s plight demonstrates how it can sometimes be weaponized, causing undue pressure and suffering to the accused. Atul mentions a particularly cruel comment made by Judge Rita Kaushik during one of his court proceedings. When Atul spoke about the rising number of suicides due to such cases, the judge reportedly responded, “Why don’t you do it?” This unkind comment, combined with the mounting financial and emotional stress, pushed Atul over the edge.
Extortionate demands and emotional abuse:
Atul claimed that his wife had initially demanded ₹1 crore to settle the matter, which later escalated. He also narrated a chilling conversation in which his wife asked him why he had not committed suicide yet. When Atul said that their suffering would end if he died, she coldly replied that it would continue as her parents also owned property.
Appeal to Elon Musk and Donald Trump:
What makes Atul’s case particularly shocking is that before his death, he had reached out to Elon Musk and Donald Trump via Twitter. In his tweet, he referred to himself as “a dead man making a request.” He urged them to address issues such as harassment of men in family court systems, legal challenges, and the widespread loss of freedom of expression in India. Interestingly, he did not tag any Indian leader, but rather addressed two of the most influential figures outside the country.
Last days: A widespread issue in society
Atul’s brother said that his wife filed a divorce case and levelled allegations against Atul and his entire family. Despite paying ₹10,0000 every month as alimony, the constant pressure and allegations finally forced Atul to take his life. Atul’s case is a sad example of the challenges men face in some legal and family disputes in India. While real cases of harassment against women should not be ignored, Atul’s story highlights how the legal system can be exploited, leading to disastrous results.
